Shrewsbury Auction Centre enjoyed the highest volume of Store Cattle and buyers for a number of years on Thursday 10th October.

In total 499 cattle were sold, with plenty of demand and premium given for the suckler bred stock.

We had a wonderful season entry of store cattle forward for our first sale of October with 52 Vendors and 40 Buyers present at the ringside. There was plenty of bidding and competition throughout the sale but as expected the trade reflected the current beef prices. There is a real premium for quality cattle with buyers seeking to make the best grades and price they possibly can.

The trade peaked at £1100 for a wonderful Charolais Heifer from I J Faulkner being 590kg, this was followed by a pen of 5 heifers from the same good home at £1070 (560kg). Eddy Ackerley of Sandbach saw his 18mo Limousin Heifer sell for £985 at 500kg.

Steers sold to a top of £1090 for a beaut of a Limousin from JB & JVE Jones of Redhill. All the cattle from this holding were a true credit to the holding selling others to £1070, £1065, £1050. Janet Jones (pictured with husband, John) told us that she and her husband, John, have been farming at Redhill since before they were married 45 years ago and are gradually starting to sell more of their livestock with a view to retiring at some point in the near future.

Messrs Lightfoot of Mold brought a great run of 35 Cattle which sold to £1080 (620kg) for a smart Charolais Steer. A price of note came for Pure Hereford steers from John Pritchard selling for £890 or 182ppk.

Angus from Messrs Lightfoot topped the steers premium selling for £1040 or 208ppk. Other lightweight steers to £ 205ppkg (435kg) for JB Griffiths’ smart 17mo Steers

A pen of 9 nice Charolais Heifers were forward from R Lightfoot and Sons weight 440kg they proved that buyers want large pens of quality cattle here to sell for £ 915 or 208ppk. Angus Heifers sold to £905 (540kg) for J E Thomas & Son from Welshpool. Limousin Heifers from Cox Farming Company sold to a pleasing £945 (565kg) at 23mo.

Holstein Steers met very good bidding selling in excess of 100ppk for the plainest of types to a top of 134ppk £750 for a more Friesian Type.

It was great to see so many cattle and vendors there, the latest in a number of very successful markets in recent weeks and we’re looking forward to some more here in Shrewsbury and our sister market in Bishops Castle later in the month.
